An alphabet before an interpretation
Runes are first of all writing signs. The Elder Futhark contains 24. Looking at their shapes and order provides a starting framework before exploring contemporary symbolic readings.
Look, compare, recognise
Choose a few runes and notice what changes between them: a branch, an axis, an intersection. Return to the alphabet and try to recognise those signs. Repetition makes the forms familiar.
Learn through practice
In i-Futhark, profiles and quizzes support this path. Each quiz session has ten questions. Creating a symbol or exploring a guided reading gives you another way to meet the runes you have learned.
Keep different kinds of meaning distinct
A reconstructed name, a historical record and a modern symbolic association have different kinds of evidence. Our approach distinguishes these layers rather than turning a personal reading into a universal truth.
A few points of reference
How many runes should I learn?
The Elder Futhark has 24 signs. Discover them gradually, in groups of eight or a few shapes at a time.
Do I need to know Norse mythology?
It can enrich your exploration, but you can begin with shapes and writing. Mythology does not replace evidence about runes.
